An alphanumeric LED display, also called a 14-segment or 16-segment display, adds diagonal and center vertical segments to the familiar 7-segment layout. With those extra segments it can show upper- and lowercase English letters, digits and common symbols. Letters such as M, W, K and X, which a 7-segment display cannot form clearly, become easy to read.
If your product only shows numbers, a 7-segment display is simpler and needs fewer drive lines. If it needs letters or short words, choose an alphanumeric display. If it needs icons, graphics or your own font, look at a dot matrix display.
